Castello di Piovera, located in the province of Alessandria, is a historic castle with origins as a 14th-century fortress. Built on the site of previous Roman, Lombard, and Carolingian settlements, it controlled the Via del Sale, an important trade route. The castle was owned by several noble families, including the Visconti, Sforza, and Balbi. The Balbi family transformed the fortress into a stately home in the 17th century. Today, the castle is owned by Count Niccolò Calvi di Bergolo, who opened it to the public in 1972. Visitors can explore the castle's furnished interiors, which feature collections of art, artifacts, and historical objects. The castle also hosts art workshops and an educational farm. The surrounding 30-hectare park features walking trails, stables, and cellars. The castle hosts weddings, concerts, and exhibitions. The castle offers various themed routes for visitors. These include a general culture and nature tour, a journey through time, and a guided tour of the main floor. The castle is open for visits every Sunday from April to October.
