The Cittadella di Alessandria, located in Alessandria, Italy, is a magnificent example of an 18th-century star fort and a lasting symbol of military architecture. Constructed between 1732 and 1808 by the Kingdom of Sardinia, the fortress was designed by Ignazio Bertola and Francesco Ludovico Luigi de Willencourt. Today, it is one of the best-preserved fortifications of that era and is among the few remaining in its original environment, free from modern obstructions. Spanning over 74 hectares, the Cittadella features a modern fortress design with six bastioned fronts, cavalieri, tunnels, and casemates. A wide moat, connected to the Tanaro river, surrounds the structure and adds to its formidable appearance. Throughout its history, the Cittadella has been a key strategic point, withstanding sieges and serving as a vital stronghold during various conflicts, including the War of the Austrian Succession and the Napoleonic era. Visitors can explore the ramparts, wander through the open grounds, and delve into the rich history of this impressive site. The Cittadella also houses a museum displaying over 1,500 uniforms, weapons and memorabilia from the Royal Italian Army. The site is managed by the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (FAI) and is open to the public for visits, with guided tours available.
