Nestled in the hills of Castell'Alfero, in the Asti province of Italy, lies the Roseto della Sorpresa, a 'surprise' rose garden that captivates visitors with its beauty and tranquility. The garden spans approximately 3.5 acres, encompassing a hillside and a small wood, creating a slightly wild yet harmonious environment.The Roseto della Sorpresa is more than just a collection; it's a living testament to the history and diversity of roses. It features nearly 100 wild rose species and a vast assortment of old European garden roses, predating hybridization with Chinese germplasm. Among its treasures are ancient varieties of Rosa gallica, with around 100 cultivars, some of which are exceptionally rare. Visitors can also admire a comprehensive selection of old European roses from the alba, centifolia, damascena, and Portland groups, alongside numerous Bourbon, Noisette, Chinensis, Rugosa, and Hybrid Perpetual roses. Adding to its allure, the garden includes about 100 modern 'old' roses, which are now seldom seen in other gardens.The garden itself blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, respecting the local ecosystem.
