Discover more about Rocca Maggiore

The Rocca Maggiore, a defining landmark of Assisi, stands as a testament to the city's rich and often turbulent history. Its story began in the 12th century when imperial troops erected the initial structure on what was believed to be pre-existing Etruscan ruins. In 1198, the people of Assisi destroyed the fortress, only for it to be rebuilt in 1365 under Cardinal Albornoz to defend Assisi. Over the centuries, the Rocca Maggiore served various purposes, from a strategic military stronghold to a residence for castellans, and even a prison and warehouse. The fortress witnessed clashes between powerful families and saw the brief residence of Cesare Borgia and his sister Lucrezia. The last significant construction occurred in 1535 with the addition of a circular bastion. Today, after extensive restoration, the Rocca Maggiore welcomes visitors to explore its well-preserved medieval architecture. Visitors can explore the interior courtyard, climb the towers, and walk along the ramparts, all while enjoying unparalleled views of Assisi and the surrounding Umbrian valley. The fortress provides a captivating glimpse into medieval life, with reconstructed objects and exhibits showcasing the era's culture and military history.
