Discover more about Fortress of Girifalco

The Fortress of Girifalco, standing guard over Cortona, is a historical tapestry woven from Etruscan origins to Medici grandeur. Its story began in the early medieval period, possibly on the site of an ancient Etruscan fortification, with the first documented mention dating back to 1258. Over the centuries, it underwent numerous renovations, reflecting the changing powers that controlled Cortona. In the 16th century, Cosimo I de' Medici recognized Cortona's strategic importance and ordered a complete renovation of the fortress. The task was entrusted to Gabrio Serbelloni and Francesco Laparelli, who transformed it into a formidable example of military architecture. The fortress's trapezoidal plan, with its four bastions, was designed to withstand heavy artillery barrages. Despite its imposing presence, the fortress was never actually employed in battle after its reconstruction. Today, the Fortress of Girifalco is a major tourist attraction, offering visitors a chance to step back in time and explore its ramparts and hidden corners. The climb to the top is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Cortona, the Valdichiana, and as far as Lake Trasimeno in Umbria. The fortress also hosts exhibitions, concerts, and workshops, adding a contemporary layer to its rich history.
