Discover more about Catacombs of San Gennaro

The Catacombs of San Gennaro, located beneath the bustling Sanità district of Naples, represent a sprawling underground burial complex and a testament to the city's rich religious history. Originating between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, the catacombs began as a noble family's tomb before expanding to accommodate the growing Christian community. The site is named after San Gennaro (Saint Januarius), the patron saint of Naples, whose remains were interred here in the 5th century AD. The catacombs are divided into two main levels: the Upper Catacomb and the Lower Catacomb. The Upper Catacomb, dating back to the 3rd century AD, showcases some of the earliest Christian paintings in Southern Italy. The Crypt of the Bishops, located near San Gennaro's tomb, served as the final resting place for Naples' early bishops. The Lower Catacomb features a vast vestibule with ceilings reaching up to 6 meters and houses a large baptismal font commissioned by Bishop Paul II. Visitors can explore the spacious chambers adorned with well-preserved frescoes and mosaics, some dating back to the 2nd century AD. The artwork provides insights into early Christian iconography and symbolism, with depictions of biblical scenes, Christian symbols, and portraits of saints. The catacombs also hold the remains of bishops and other prominent members of the local community. The site remained a pilgrimage destination until the 9th century AD, when the relics of San Gennaro were moved. The catacombs were rediscovered in the 17th century and later used as a shelter during World War II. Today, the Catacombs of San Gennaro are managed by a social cooperative, La Paranza, formed by local youths, offering guided tours in Italian and English.
