Discover more about Napoli Sotterranea Guided Authorized Tour

Napoli Sotterranea, or Naples Underground, offers a captivating journey through 2,400 years of history, hidden beneath the vibrant streets of Naples. This subterranean world began in the 4th century BCE when ancient Greeks quarried tuff stone to build the city of Neapolis. The Romans expanded the underground, creating a sophisticated system of aqueducts and storage units to supply fresh water. Over the centuries, the underground served various purposes. During the Second World War, it was used as an air raid shelter, providing refuge for the population during bombings. Today, visitors can explore these ancient tunnels and caverns on guided tours, witnessing the remnants of different eras. The tour showcases ancient cisterns, a Greco-Roman theater, wartime shelters, and hypogeum gardens. Knowledgeable guides lead visitors through the maze of tunnels, sharing stories and insights into the history and significance of this unique underground city. The main entrance is located in Piazza San Gaetano. Exploring Napoli Sotterranea offers a unique perspective on the city's rich past and the ingenuity of its inhabitants. One of the interesting stories related to the site is the legend of 'O Munaciello'. The workers who serviced the underground cisterns, called pozzari, were rumored to be short of stature, like dwarfs, so they could access the narrow and low pathways in the cisterns. They were called munacielli because they dressed like monks in robes, so were "little monks".
