4.4

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, dominating Montepulciano's Piazza Grande, is a testament to Renaissance architecture and the town's rich cultural heritage. Construction began in 1586 and concluded in 1680, with its consecration in 1712. The cathedral was built on the site of an older parish church; the original 15th-century bell tower still stands, though its belfry was never completed. The facade of the cathedral remains incomplete, giving it a rustic charm. Inside, the architectural layout, inspired by Florentine models, showcases an austere elegance with plaster surfaces and stone blocks. The interior is a Latin cross with three naves divided by pillars and round arches. The central nave has a barrel vault, and the two lateral vaults have a cross. The cathedral is home to several significant artworks. The most prominent is the monumental Triptych of the Assumption by Taddeo di Bartolo, dating back to 1401. The triptych, located above the main altar, depicts the Assumption of the Virgin and includes a self-portrait of the artist. Another notable work is the funerary monument of Bartolomeo Aragazzi, created by Michelozzo between 1427 and 1436, now divided into fragments displayed throughout the church. Visitors can also admire a 15th-century panel painting by Sano di Pietro and a terracotta relief by Andrea Della Robbia.
