Discover more about Etruscan Well

The Etruscan Well, or Pozzo Etrusco, is a captivating historical site located in the heart of Perugia. Constructed in the second half of the 3rd century BC, this well stands as a testament to the advanced engineering capabilities of the Etruscan civilization. Originally intended as a cistern, it was later transformed into a well to tap into a deep vein of water, ensuring a reliable water supply for the population. The well's construction is a marvel in itself. The cylindrical shaft, reaching a depth of approximately 37 meters, is lined with large stone blocks similar to those used for Perugia's Etruscan walls. The upper section of the well features travertine slabs supported by massive stone beams, each weighing an estimated 8,000 kg. These beams were fitted in place without the use of mortar, showcasing the precision and skill of Etruscan engineers. Over the centuries, the Etruscan Well has undergone several renovations, beginning in the 15th century, indicating its continuous use as a vital water source for the local community. Today, the well is open to the public as a museum, offering visitors a chance to descend into its depths and marvel at its ancient architecture. A modern walkway allows visitors to safely traverse the well and gaze down at the water source far below. The entrance to the Etruscan Well is located at Piazza Ignazio Danti, 18, through a covered walkway that leads to the underground sections of Palazzo Sorbello. Inside, an informative video introduces the monument, providing context before visitors explore the well's inner chamber. The well's interior is humid, with water dripping from the walls and ceiling, adding to the atmospheric experience.
