Discover more about Oasi wwf lago di Alviano

The Oasi WWF Lago di Alviano, situated in the Province of Terni, is a protected wetland area of about 900 hectares. The oasis spans the municipalities of Guardea, Alviano, Montecchio, and Civitella d'Agliano, offering a rich ecosystem for various species. The lake was formed in 1963 following the construction of a dam on the Tiber River to generate electricity. Over time, this shallow reservoir transformed into a thriving wetland, attracting thousands of migratory birds and becoming an important nesting site. The WWF began managing the reserve in 1990, providing visitor access through boardwalks and birdwatching hides. The oasis includes riparian woodlands, reedbeds, marshes, and the shallow lake, creating diverse habitats. Over 250 bird species have been recorded, making it a haven for birdwatchers. From November to March, the lake hosts many ducks and waterfowl, including mallards, teals, and geese. Grey herons, egrets, and bitterns are also common, with a heron colony of over 200 nests. The oasis offers two main trails: the Sentiero Natura, a 1.5 km circular path accessible to disabled visitors, and the Vecchio Sentiero, a 2.5 km natural path through the riparian woodland. These trails feature birdwatching hides and observation towers, allowing visitors to observe wildlife without disturbing them. The Centro di Educazione Ambientale provides educational activities and scientific research opportunities.
