Discover more about Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Orvieto

Located in the heart of Orvieto, adjacent to the Duomo, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Orvieto resides within the Palazzo Papale, a Gothic-style palace dating back to the 13th century. Inaugurated in 1982, the museum, along with the Museo Claudio Faina, presents a comprehensive overview of Orvieto's Etruscan past, when the city was a prominent center in Etruria. The museum's collection comprises archaeological finds from various necropolises in the surrounding areas, including Corno di Bardano, Crocifisso del Tufo, and Cannicella. Visitors can admire a diverse array of artifacts, such as Etruscan ceramics, bronzes, jewelry, and the remains of chamber tombs. A highlight of the museum is the reconstructed frescoes from the Golini Tombs, discovered in the Porano area. These 4th-century BC tombs feature vibrant depictions of Etruscan funerary rites and banquets, offering a glimpse into their beliefs, daily life, and social structures. The scenes showcase servants preparing food and a flute player entertaining guests, all in the presence of underworld deities. More recently, the museum has incorporated finds from excavations at Campo della Fiera, believed to be the site of Fanum Voltumnae, the federal sanctuary of the Etruscans. This sacred area, used from the 6th century BC to the 15th century AD, further enriches the museum's collection and provides additional insights into Etruscan civilization.
