Discover more about Fontana Pretoria

Nestled in the heart of Palermo's historic center, the Fontana Pretoria is one of the city's most iconic and controversial landmarks. This magnificent fountain, also known as the "Fountain of Shame" (Fontana della Vergogna), is celebrated for its striking beauty, intricate design, and fascinating history. Originally created in 1554 by Florentine sculptor Francesco Camilliani for a private villa in Florence, the fountain was purchased by the Palermo Senate in 1573 to embellish the city. It was transported to Palermo in 644 pieces and reassembled in Piazza Pretoria, near the Palazzo Pretorio (City Hall), the Church of Santa Caterina, and the Church of San Giuseppe dei Teatini. The fountain's design features three concentric circular basins with water cascading from top to bottom. It is adorned with 48 marble statues depicting mythological gods and goddesses, nymphs, and animal heads, representing themes of abundance, nature, and divinity. The fountain's nudity sparked outrage among the locals, leading to its infamous nickname. Legend says that nuns from a nearby convent attempted to damage the statues due to their obscenity. Despite the initial controversy, the Fontana Pretoria has become a beloved symbol of Palermo, celebrated for its artistic and historical significance. Today, visitors can admire the fountain's intricate details, the play of sunlight on the white marble, and the vibrant atmosphere of Piazza Pretoria.
