Chiesa del Gesù: A Baroque Masterpiece in Palermo

The Chiesa del Gesù, or Casa Professa, stands as one of the most significant examples of Baroque art and architecture in Palermo. The Jesuits began constructing the church in the late 16th century, with the original design by Giovanni Tristano. However, the church was later expanded in the early 17th century to reflect the grandiose style typical of Jesuit architecture. The church was consecrated in 1636. Inside, visitors are greeted by a breathtaking display of Baroque artistry. Walls are adorned with colorful marble, intricate carvings, and detailed frescoes. The marble bas-reliefs in the tribuna, depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds (1710–14) and the Adoration of the Magi (1719–21) by Gioacchino Vitagliano, are particularly noteworthy. The church suffered significant damage during World War II, when a bomb destroyed the dome and surrounding walls. However, careful restoration work has revived its original splendor, and the church reopened in 2009. Today, the Chiesa del Gesù remains a testament to the artistic and spiritual legacy of the Jesuit order in Sicily. Visitors can explore the church's chapels, admire its stunning artwork, and appreciate the serene atmosphere. The adjacent Museo di Casa Professa houses a collection of sacred art and artifacts, providing further insight into the church's history and significance.
