Discover more about Palazzo Abatellis

Palazzo Abatellis, an architectural jewel in Palermo, stands as a testament to the city's rich history and artistic heritage. Constructed between 1490 and 1495 by Matteo Carnelivari for Francesco Abatellis, the port master of the Kingdom of Sicily, the palazzo exemplifies the Gothic-Catalan style. Its austere yet elegant design reflects the transition from medieval to Renaissance influences, making it a unique landmark in Palermo's Kalsa neighborhood. After Abatellis' death, the building was converted into a Dominican monastery in 1526, leading to some structural modifications, including the addition of a chapel. Severely damaged during the Allied bombings of 1943, the palazzo was meticulously restored in the 1950s. The restoration, overseen by architects Mario Guiotto and Armando Dillon, transformed the space into the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, which opened in 1954. Carlo Scarpa, a renowned Venetian architect, designed the museum's layout, creating a captivating environment for the art. The Galleria Regionale houses an impressive collection of Sicilian art from the 12th to the 18th centuries. Key highlights include Antonello da Messina's Virgin Annunciate, a serene and iconic masterpiece of the Renaissance. The Triumph of Death fresco, a hauntingly beautiful depiction of mortality, is another major draw. The museum also features sculptures by Francesco Laurana, including the Bust of Eleonora of Aragon, and works by the Gagini family. The palazzo itself is a work of art, with its elegant courtyard, portico, and loggia. The museum's layout, designed by Carlo Scarpa, enhances the visitor experience, providing ample space for each artwork and creating a harmonious dialogue between the art and the architecture.
