Discover more about Annunciazione a Maria

Located in Parma, Italy, the Annunciazione a Maria is an attraction for those interested in Renaissance art. It is believed to be a detached fresco of the Annunciation by Correggio, dating back to the 1520s. The fresco illustrates the scene of the Annunciation, where the angel Gabriel appears to Mary to announce that she will conceive and bear a son, Jesus. Correggio, an Emilian painter of the High Renaissance, is known for his contributions to the development of chiaroscuro and perspective. Giorgio Vasari, in his “Vite” makes note of the fresco, writing that it was so well done that when the church was to be renovated, the friars had the wall around it reinforced with iron and carefully cut it out to be moved to a safer place in the convent. In 1546, the fresco was removed from the church where it was originally located and moved to a new church. The fresco depicts the angel Gabriel, surrounded by a cloud and accompanied by angels, approaching Mary. The Virgin kneels and lowers her head, placing a hand on her chest, while above her, a dove—the Holy Spirit—flies surrounded by golden rays. The Annunciation itself is a significant event in Christianity, marking the moment when the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would conceive and give birth to Jesus. This event is seen as the start of the fulfillment of God's promise and the beginning of the new covenant.
