Discover more about Castello di Torrechiara

Castello di Torrechiara, located near Langhirano in the province of Parma, is a captivating castle that stands as a testament to both military might and romantic love. Built between 1448 and 1460 by Pier Maria II de' Rossi, the Count of San Secondo, the castle served as a defensive stronghold and a noble residence for him and his mistress, Bianca Pellegrini d'Arluno. The castle's architecture reflects the influence of the Sforza-Visconti castles, featuring a rectangular layout with three layers of walls, four corner towers, and machicolations. The name Torrechiara possibly stems from “Torciara” (wine press), reflecting the area's history of vineyards and olive groves. Inside, visitors can explore a series of frescoed rooms, including the renowned Camera d'Oro (Golden Chamber), which celebrates the love between Pier Maria and Bianca. These frescoes, attributed to Benedetto Bembo, depict Bianca as a pilgrim traveling between the Rossi family's castles. Other notable rooms include the Hall of the Acrobats and rooms adorned with grotesque decorations by Cesare Baglione. Beyond the castle walls lies a charming medieval village, preserving the original layout of the ancient settlement. The castle is part of the Castles of the Duchy circuit, offering a glimpse into the region's rich history and culture. Today, the castle hosts events and exhibitions, drawing visitors to experience its beauty and learn about its storied past.
