Discover more about Port Maria Civic Centre

The Port Maria Civic Centre stands as a testament to both history and community spirit in the heart of Port Maria, St. Mary, Jamaica. Originally constructed in 1821, this elegant Georgian building served as the Port Maria Courthouse, housing the police station and other municipal offices. The Rt. Honourable Sir Alexander Bustamante, Jamaica's first Prime Minister, was famously tried and acquitted here in 1942. Unfortunately, the building was ravaged by fire in 1988, leaving only ruins. However, through the San Jose Accord, the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), with funding from the Jamaican and Venezuelan governments, meticulously restored the building. It reopened in 2000 as the Port Maria Civic Centre, retaining its original Georgian architectural style. The restored building features a mahogany staircase and sash windows, staying true to its original design. Today, the Civic Centre functions as a cultural hub, hosting a variety of community events, art exhibitions, and cultural performances. It provides a space for locals and tourists alike to engage with Jamaican heritage and the vibrant spirit of St. Mary. The Town Hall/Conference Room is used for meetings and events. While some spaces remain unoccupied, there are administrative offices and occasionally craft shops.
