Discover more about Noël Coward’s Firefly House

Noël Coward's Firefly House, located near Galina, Jamaica, is more than just a museum; it's a portal into the world of the celebrated playwright, composer, and actor. Originally named 'Look Out' by the pirate Henry Morgan, who used it as a vantage point, Coward purchased the property in the late 1940s, renaming it 'Firefly Hill' after the island's luminous insects. He built his home in 1956, a surprisingly spartan structure considering he often entertained royalty and jet-setters. Firefly became Coward's beloved Jamaican retreat, where he entertained a wide range of famous guests, including Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Winston Churchill, and Ian Fleming. The estate offers commanding views of the St. Mary harbor and the north coast of Jamaica. Coward found solace and inspiration at Firefly, writing many of his famous plays here. He died at Firefly in 1973 and is buried in the garden, marked by a simple marble slab. Today, visitors can explore Coward's art studio, view photographs of his celebrated guests, and see displays of his paintings and belongings. The house and grounds offer a unique glimpse into Coward's life and his deep connection to Jamaica. The property is now a National Heritage Site administered by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust.
