Getting there

Walking

From JR Matsumoto Station, the castle is approximately a 15-minute walk. Exit the station and head north, following the main street. You'll pass shops and restaurants along the way. Keep an eye out for signs directing you to Matsumoto Castle. The castle will become visible as you approach the city center.

Public Transport

The 'Town Sneaker' bus (Northern Course) provides a direct connection from JR Matsumoto Station to Matsumoto Castle in about 5 minutes. The fare is ¥200 per ride, or you can purchase a one-day pass for ¥500. The bus stop is located outside the station's main exit. Look for the colorful bus with clear signage.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available at JR Matsumoto Station. A taxi ride to Matsumoto Castle takes approximately 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic. The fare is typically around ¥800-¥1200. Ask the driver to take you to 'Matsumoto-jo'.

Driving

If driving, take the Nagano Expressway to the Matsumoto Exit, approximately 3 km from the city center. Follow signs to Matsumoto Castle. Several municipal parking lots are available near the castle, including the Matsumoto Castle Gate Parking Area and the Kaichi Parking Area. Parking fees range from ¥150-¥200 per 30 minutes. Be aware that parking can be limited during peak seasons.

Matsumoto Castle, a designated National Treasure, stands as one of Japan's most complete and beautiful original castles. Often called 'Crow Castle' (Karasu-jō) because of its distinctive black exterior, the castle's origins trace back to the Sengoku period. The main keep, constructed around 1594, is the oldest surviving five-tiered, six-story castle tower in Japan.The castle's grounds feature a wide moat, picturesque gardens, and vermillion bridges, all set against the backdrop of the Japanese Alps. Visitors can explore the castle's interior, ascending steep staircases to discover displays of armor and weaponry, and enjoy panoramic views from the top floor. The castle also features a Moon Viewing Room, a unique architectural element found in only two castles nationwide.Throughout the year, Matsumoto Castle hosts various seasonal events, including cherry blossom festivals, taiko drum performances, and traditional theater. The castle is open to the public year-round, offering a captivating experience for history buffs and casual tourists alike. Exploring the surrounding area, visitors can discover the charming Nawate and Nakamachi Streets, known for their historical architecture and local shops.
