Getting There

  • Public Transport

    Yushima Seido is easily accessible by public transport. From Ueno Station, take the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line to Suehirocho Station. The ride is approximately 7 minutes and costs ¥160-¥200. From there, it's a short walk to the temple. Alternatively, take the JR Line to Ochanomizu Station, from which it is a 2-minute walk to Yushima Seido. A single subway ride typically costs between ¥100-¥200. Consider purchasing a Tokyo Subway Ticket for unlimited travel.

  • Walking

    From Ochanomizu Station, cross the Hijiri Bridge and walk towards Yushima. The temple is a short walk from Akihabara's Mansei Bridge. The walk is approximately 5 minutes.

  • Taxi

    Taxis are readily available in Tokyo. From Ueno Station, a taxi ride to Yushima Seido takes about 2 minutes and costs between ¥1400-¥1700. The standard taxi fare in Tokyo is ¥410 for the first 1,052 meters, and then ¥80 for every 237 meters. Be aware that there may be a 20% surcharge between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM.

Yushima Seido, or Yushima Sacred Hall, is a venerable Confucian temple located in the Yushima district of Tokyo. Dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868), it provides a peaceful atmosphere and a significant historical experience for visitors.Originally founded in 1630 by Hayashi Razan as a private Confucian temple in Ueno Park, it was relocated in 1690 by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi to its current location. Yushima Seido served as an important educational institution for the Tokugawa shogunate. It was a center for learning Confucianism, which greatly influenced Japanese culture, attitudes, and morals. The temple is considered the birthplace of Japanese school education.The current structure, completed in 1935, was designed by Itō Chūta and built of reinforced concrete after the original wooden buildings were destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Its unique black exterior sets it apart from traditional vermilion Japanese temples. Inside the main hall, known as Taiseiden, you'll find a statue of Confucius flanked by four wise men. The grounds also feature a statue of Confucius donated by the Lions Club of Taiwan in 1975.Today, Yushima Seido is a popular tourist destination and a place of worship. Many students visit to pray for success in their exams. The temple also hosts cultural events throughout the year.
