Sankeien Garden: A Journey Through Time and Nature

Sankeien Garden is a 175,000 square meter Japanese garden in Yokohama, a testament to the vision of Tomitaro Hara, also known as Sankei Hara, a wealthy silk trader who opened it to the public in 1906. The garden harmoniously blends natural beauty with meticulously relocated historical structures from across Japan, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the country's architectural past.The garden is divided into two main areas: the Outer Garden, which was opened to the public in 1906, and the Inner Garden, which was originally the private garden of the Hara family and opened in 1958. Within Sankeien, you'll discover 17 historically significant buildings, including 10 that are designated as Important Cultural Properties. These include an elegant daimyo residence, several tea houses, and the main hall and three-storied pagoda of Kyoto's old Tomyoji Temple. The three-story pagoda, originally constructed in Kyoto in 1457, was relocated to Sankeien in 1914 and is the oldest wooden pagoda in the Kanto region.As you stroll through the garden, you'll encounter bridges, streams, small waterfalls, bamboo groves, and ponds, creating a sense of tranquility and immersion in nature. The garden is renowned for its seasonal beauty, with cherry blossoms in late March/early April, lotus blossoms in July/August, colorful autumn foliage, and plum blossoms in mid-to-late February.
