    Kajo Park is approximately a 10-minute walk north from the west exit of JR Yamagata Station. Exit the station and proceed north, crossing the main street. Continue straight, and you'll soon see the castle fortress and the park entrance. The park is located within the moat of Yamagata Castle, making it easily recognizable.

    From Yamagata Station, take a Yamako Bus. Several bus lines stop near Kajo Park, including the bus from 松原口 station to 霞城公園前 bus stop, which takes approximately 12 minutes. Check local bus schedules for the most up-to-date information. A single bus fare typically costs ¥55-¥75.

  • Taxi

    Taxis are readily available at Yamagata Station. A taxi ride to Kajo Park takes approximately 5 minutes and costs between ¥2300 and ¥2800. The taxi will drop you off near the park's main entrance.

Kajo Park, also known as Yamagata Castle Ruins, is a 35.9-hectare urban oasis that invites visitors to step back in time and immerse themselves in the history of Yamagata. The park is built on the site of Yamagata Castle, once the largest castle in the Tohoku region and the stronghold of Yoshiaki Mogami, a prominent feudal lord during Japan's Sengoku era. Although the castle itself no longer stands, the park retains significant historical features, including the Ninomaru moat, earthen mounds, and impressive stone walls, offering a glimpse into its former grandeur.The Ninomaru Higashi Otemon Gate, meticulously restored in 1991, serves as the main entrance to the park. Within the park, you'll find cultural facilities such as the Yamagata City Museum of History, the Yamagata Prefectural Museum, and the Yamagata Museum of Art. Kajo Park is also renowned as a premier cherry blossom viewing spot, boasting approximately 1,500 cherry trees that burst into bloom in spring. During the annual Kajo Cherry Blossom Viewing Party, the cherry blossoms along the southern moat are illuminated, creating a magical nighttime spectacle.Ongoing excavations and restoration efforts aim to revive the charms of this historical site, with plans to redevelop the entire park as a historic site by 2033. Visitors can explore walking paths extending above the earthen mounds and, from April 2024, experience a VR/AR recreation of Yamagata Castle from the mid-Edo period.
