Misaki Fishing Port, located at the southwestern tip of the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture, has thrived as a deep-sea fishing base since the Heian Period. Its naturally good port has been in use since the 9th century. During the Edo period, it grew alongside the capital, Edo (modern-day Tokyo), as a fishing village supporting the capital's consumption. Today, Misaki is known as 'Tuna Town'.The port is one of Japan's 13 anchorages designated as a Class 3 fishing port, hosting vessels from across the country. Many come to fish the rich coastal waters for tuna, with Misaki boasting one of the highest landing volumes of bigeye tuna in Japan. The first fish market opened here in 1922.Visitors can witness the lively tuna auctions, explore the Urari Fish Market for fresh seafood and local produce, and enjoy tuna cuisine in the many restaurants. A new market facility opened in 2018, featuring an advanced freezer system to preserve the fish. You can also take a ferry to Jogashima Island for scenic views and hiking or visit the Keikyu Aburatsubo Marine Park.
