Discover more about Mount Furano

Mount Furano (富良野岳, Furano-dake) stands proudly as one of the more well-known peaks in the Daisetsu Mountain Range, located in central Hokkaido. Situated at the western end of this massive plateau-like range, it rewards hikers with expansive views across the Furano plains to the north and westward towards Yubari-dake and the Mashike Ranges on a clear day. The mountain's name, Furano, originates from the Ainu word 'Fura-nui,' potentially meaning 'Stinky Flame' or 'Foul-Smelling Place,' a reference to the sulfuric fumaroles near Tokachi Peak. However, 'hura' can also mean a pleasant smell, which is fitting considering the flower fields in the area. For hikers, Mount Furano is relatively accessible, with the car park and trailhead located at an elevation of 1,190m. The climb to the summit takes approximately 3-4 hours. The trail is rocky but not technically challenging. A popular route involves traversing the ridge east towards Kamifurano-dake via Sanpo-zan, offering a longer and more varied hiking experience. Beyond hiking, the area offers opportunities to soak in the nearby Tokachi Onsen. Ryounkaku Onsen, close to the trailhead, provides great views of Mount Furano from its open-air bath.
