Discover more about Mount Tokachi

Mount Tokachi (Tokachidake) is an active stratovolcano located in Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido, Japan. Rising to 2,077 meters (6,814 ft), it is the tallest peak in the Tokachi Volcanic Group and one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. The mountain's volcanic activity contributes to the geothermal activity in the area, which supports several hot springs, including the famous Tokachi Onsen. Mount Tokachi has a history of eruptions, with the most recent confirmed eruption occurring in 2004. The most severe volcanic event occurred in 1926, resulting in a sector collapse, debris avalanche, and deadly mudflow that killed over 140 people. Despite its volcanic nature, Mount Tokachi attracts visitors with its panoramic vistas, diverse flora and fauna, and therapeutic hot springs. Hiking trails provide access to the summit, offering views of the surrounding Daisetsuzan National Park. The stark beauty of the volcanic landscape contrasts with alpine flowers in spring and fiery foliage in autumn. Visitors can explore fumaroles, relax in hot springs, and hike the Tokachi Summit Trail. The Tokachi Onsen area offers resorts and spas with day-use hot spring entry typically costing 500 to 2,000 yen ($3-$13 USD).
