Joren Falls: Izu's Mystical Cascade

Joren Falls, located in the Yugashima district of Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a captivating natural landmark. This majestic waterfall, cascading from a height of 25 meters and spanning 7 meters in width, is a highlight of the Izu Peninsula Geopark and recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls.The falls were created approximately 17,000 years ago by the eruption of Mt. Hachikubo, with lava flows shaping the surrounding landscape. The area is characterized by columnar joints, formed as the lava cooled, which add to the waterfall's unique geological appeal. The name 'Joren' is believed to originate from Jorenji Temple, which once stood near the waterfall's left bank.Joren Falls is not only a visual spectacle but also a place steeped in local folklore. It is said to be the home of the Jorogumo, a spider yokai that can transform into a seductive woman. Visitors can descend approximately 200 steps from the parking area to reach the waterfall basin, immersing themselves in the refreshing, negative ion-rich atmosphere.The area around Joren Falls offers more than just scenic beauty. The clear waters support thriving wasabi farms, and visitors can sample various wasabi products, including the popular wasabi ice cream. Fishing is another popular activity, with opportunities to catch rainbow trout and amago in the river.
