Discover more about Hishi Yagura

Hishi Yagura, meaning Diamond Turret, is a reconstructed watchtower within Kanazawa Castle Park, a site steeped in history as the former seat of the powerful Maeda clan. The turret gets its name from its distinctive diamond shape, featuring unusual angles of 80 and 100 degrees, a design that required exceptional skill to execute. Originally built as part of the castle's defenses, Hishi Yagura provided strategic views of the surrounding area, particularly the front and rear gates, allowing for early detection of potential threats. The current structure was rebuilt between 1998 and 2001, using traditional methods and materials to replicate its mid-19th-century appearance. Inside, exhibits showcase the intricate construction techniques employed, including the use of diamond-shaped posts crafted from Japanese cypress. Visitors can also see examples of 'ishi-otoshi' (stone dropping) mechanisms and thick pine beams, highlighting the defensive strategies incorporated into the design. The turret also features lead roof tiles and 'Namako Kabe' (sea cucumber wall), adding to its distinctive aesthetic. While exploring Hishi Yagura, take note of the meticulous details and craftsmanship that went into its reconstruction. The exhibits provide insights into the castle's history and the role the turret played in its defense. Elevators and escalators have been added to ensure accessibility for all visitors.
