    Discover more about Niōmon Gate

Nestled in Nikko, the Niōmon Gate marks the entrance to the renowned Rinnoji Temple. Built in the early 17th century, the gate exemplifies Edo-period architecture, adorned with detailed carvings and vivid colors. The Niōmon Gate is a two-story gate guarded by two wooden warriors called Niō, protectors of the historical Buddha. The statue on the right is called Naraen Kongō, with his mouth open to utter the first letter of the Sanskrit alphabet, which is pronounced "a". The left statue is called Misshaku Kongō and has his mouth closed, representing the last letter of the Sanskrit alphabet, pronounced "um". These two letters (a-un in Japanese) together symbolize the birth and death of all things.Beyond the gate, the Rinnoji Temple complex unfolds with gardens and sacred halls that reflect the traditions of Buddhism in Japan. The site is known for its seasonal beauty, with cherry blossoms in spring and colorful foliage in autumn. Visitors can explore the temple grounds and deepen their understanding through guided tours. The Niōmon Gate stands as the first of three protective gates that guard the mausoleum. The gate houses the Niō (Benevolent Kings). It is said that this is where the term “A-Un Breathing” comes from, which describes two people functioning together so well it's as if they were joined by their breath.
