Daruma-ji Temple, nestled in Oji, Nara, is a significant historical and spiritual site revered as the origin of the Daruma creed. According to the Nihon Shoki, one of Japan's oldest historical records, Prince Shotoku encountered a starving man in 613 AD and offered him aid. Despite the Prince's kindness, the man passed away. When Prince Shotoku returned to the grave, the body had vanished, leaving only the clothes he had provided. This man was later considered an incarnation of Bodhidharma Daishi (Daruma).The temple's main hall is believed to be constructed over Bodhidharma's grave. The temple houses wooden statues of Prince Shotoku and a seated Bodhidharma, recognized as Important Cultural Properties. Daruma-ji Temple gained attention as the venue for the first annual 'Bodhidharma fell' national championships in November 2021, a children's game where players yell 'Bodhidharma fell'.Visitors can explore the temple grounds, appreciate the historic architecture, and learn about the origins of the Daruma tradition. Volunteer guides are available on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. The temple is also associated with Yukimaruzo, Oji's official mascot. Daruma-ji is close to other attractions such as the UNESCO-recognized Horyuji Temple.
