Overview
Kashihara Jingu, located in Kashihara, Nara Prefecture, is a significant Shinto shrine dedicated to Emperor Jimmu, the first emperor of Japan. The shrine was established in 1890 on the site believed to be where Emperor Jimmu ascended to the throne in 660 BC, according to ancient chronicles. The local community's desire to commemorate Emperor Jimmu led to its founding, with Emperor Meiji granting buildings from the Kyoto Imperial Palace for its construction. The vast grounds of Kashihara Jingu cover nearly 530,000 square meters and offer visitors a serene and spiritual experience. The main hall, originally Naishidokoro Hall from the Kyoto Imperial Palace, is a highlight. The shrine also features a Treasure Hall, which was built in 2000 to commemorate the 110th anniversary and displays valuable treasures, including Emperor Meiji's sword and Empress Shoken's mirror.Visitors can stroll along the wide avenue lined with ginkgo trees leading from Kashiharajingu-mae Station to the shrine's entrance. The shrine is known for its beautiful main shrine building and the forests of Japanese blue oaks. Fukuda Pond, located in the southern part of the grounds, offers a pleasant promenade, with cherry blossoms in spring and waterfowl in winter. Nagayama Inari Shrine, a smaller shrine predating Kashihara Jingu, is also located near the pond.Kashihara Jingu holds significant cultural importance, drawing large crowds on National Foundation Day (February 11) and New Year's Day. The shrine is associated with good fortune, health, and longevity, with lucky charms and fortune papers featuring the Yatagarasu crow, which guided Emperor Jimmu.
