Kasuga Taisha Travel Guide

Kasuga Taisha, nestled in Nara Park at the foot of Mount Mikasa, is a captivating Shinto shrine with origins dating back to 768 CE. Founded by the Fujiwara clan, it served as their tutelary shrine and a protector of Nara. Legend says the deity Takemikazuchi arrived on a white deer from Kashima Shrine to safeguard the city.The shrine is famed for its thousands of lanterns. Over 2,000 stone lanterns line the approach, donated by worshippers over centuries. Hundreds of bronze lanterns hang from the buildings, creating a magical atmosphere, especially during the Lantern Festivals in February and August when they are all lit.The shrine complex includes the main sanctuary (Honden), auxiliary shrines, and the Kasuga Taisha Shinen Manyo Botanical Garden. The Honden showcases the distinctive Kasuga-zukuri architectural style. The inner area requires an admission fee and provides closer views of the shrine's buildings. The botanical garden features plants from Japan's oldest poetry collection.Deer roam freely in Nara Park and around Kasuga Taisha, considered messengers of the Shinto gods. The Kasugayama Primeval Forest behind the shrine has been protected since 841 CE and is home to diverse flora and fauna.
