Overview

Shimogamo Shrine, officially Kamo-mioya Jinja, stands as a testament to Kyoto's rich history and spiritual heritage. Dating back to the 6th century, and possibly even earlier with evidence of use as a ritual site 2,000 years ago, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers a serene escape into a world of ancient trees and sacred traditions. The shrine is dedicated to Kamo Taketsunumi no Mikoto and his daughter Tamayorihime no Mikoto, ancestors of the powerful Kamo clan who were the original inhabitants of the area.As you approach the shrine, you'll pass through the Tadasu no Mori forest, a 35-acre primeval woodland that has been preserved for centuries. Some of the trees here are up to 600 years old, creating a mystical atmosphere that transports you back in time. The forest is considered a sacred space, believed to be a place where lies are exposed. The shrine complex itself comprises 55 buildings, including the East and West Main Halls, both designated National Treasures. The vermillion-colored Rōmon gate stands 13 meters tall, making it a striking visual landmark. Be sure to visit Kawai Shrine, a subsidiary shrine dedicated to beauty, where women pray for good looks and use mirror-shaped wooden plates to paint their ideal face.Throughout the year, Shimogamo Shrine hosts various festivals and events, offering visitors a chance to experience traditional Japanese culture. The most famous is the Aoi Matsuri, held annually on May 15th, a grand procession featuring people in Heian period costumes parading from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to the shrine. The Mitarashi Festival, held in midsummer, involves wading through the Mitarashi Pond to pray for good health.Whether you're interested in history, spirituality, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Shimogamo Shrine offers a captivating journey into the heart of ancient Kyoto.
