Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Sannomiya Station in Kobe, take the JR Kobe Line to Tarumi Station (approx. 20 minutes). From Tarumi Station, the tumulus is about a 15-minute walk. Exit the station and walk east along the train tracks, following signs for Goshikizuka Kofun. Alternatively, from Tarumi Station, take a local bus towards Goshikiyama (approx. 15-20 minutes). Check the bus timetable for the latest schedules. Disembark at the bus stop closest to Goshikizuka Tumulus and follow the signs. Kobe City Bus fare: Adult 230 yen, Child 120 yen.

  • Taxi

    From JR Tarumi Station, a taxi to Goshikizuka Tumulus takes approximately 5-10 minutes. Taxis are readily available at the station's taxi rank. The estimated taxi fare is between 1,000-1,500 yen. Please note that fares may vary depending on traffic conditions and time of day.

  • Walking

    From Sanyo Train “Kasugaoka Station”, it is about 5 minutes on foot. From JR Tarumi Station, it is approximately ten minutes on foot. You can see the tombs as you walk out along the track, leaving the ticket gate to the east, so the directions are very easy to understand.

Goshikizuka Tumulus, or Sentsubo Kofun, is a fascinating historical site located in Tarumi-ku, Kobe. This large, keyhole-shaped burial mound, dating back to the late 4th and early 5th centuries, is the largest of its kind in Hyogo Prefecture. The tumulus offers a unique window into Japan's Kofun period, a time when powerful clans ruled the region.The site has been carefully restored to reflect its original appearance, allowing visitors to appreciate the scale and design of these ancient tombs. The mound is constructed in three tiers, with rows of cylindrical haniwa (clay figures) and fukiishi (stones) covering its surface. It's estimated that over 2,200 haniwa and 2.23 million fukiishi were used in its construction.From the top of the tumulus, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Akashi Strait, including the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge connecting Kobe to Awaji Island. The Goshikizuka Tumulus provides a tangible link to Japan's ancient past, offering insights into the burial practices and power structures of the time. Admission is free, and a visit to the management building allows you to view excavated items and learn more about the site's history.
