    Discover more about Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Treasure of Japan, stands as a remarkable testament to Japanese castle architecture and engineering. Often called 'White Heron Castle' (Shirasagi-jo) due to its brilliant white exterior, the castle complex comprises over eighty buildings spread across multiple baileys, connected by a network of gates and winding paths designed to confuse and slow down potential invaders. The castle's origins date back to 1333 when Akamatsu Norimura built a fort on Himeyama hill. Over the centuries, the site evolved, with Toyotomi Hideyoshi adding a three-story keep in 1581. However, the castle as it stands today largely reflects the extensive remodeling undertaken by Ikeda Terumasa between 1601 and 1609. Ikeda expanded the castle into a vast complex with multiple moats and sophisticated defensive systems.Inside the main keep, visitors can climb the narrow staircases to the top floor, which houses a small shrine and offers panoramic views of Himeji. The castle's design incorporates numerous defensive features, including loopholes for archers and gunmen, and winding paths to hinder attackers. The thick white plaster coating the walls not only contributes to the castle's aesthetic appeal but also provides excellent fire resistance.Himeji Castle has miraculously survived centuries of wars, fires, and natural disasters, including World War II bombings and the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. Today, it stands as the largest and most visited castle in Japan, attracting millions of tourists each year.
