Tomogashima, meaning 'Friend Islands,' is a cluster of four islands – Okinoshima, Jinoshima, Torajima, and Kamishima – located in the Kitan Strait off the coast of Wakayama. Okinoshima, the largest, is the primary destination for visitors. These islands, now part of the Setonaikai National Park, boast a unique combination of natural landscapes and historical remnants.From the Meiji period (1868-1912) through World War II, Tomogashima served as a strategic military site, playing a critical role in defending Osaka Bay. The Imperial Japanese Army constructed gun batteries, ammunition depots, and other fortifications, strictly prohibiting public access until after the war. Today, the abandoned ruins stand as silent witnesses to the islands' military past, offering visitors a glimpse into Japanese history.The most popular activity on Tomogashima is hiking through the network of trails that wind around Okinoshima. These trails lead to various points of interest, including the Third Battery Ruins, the largest and most well-preserved of the former military structures. Visitors can explore the interconnected tunnels and chambers, some of which are pitch black, adding an element of adventure. Other notable sites include the Tomogashima Lighthouse, built in 1872, and observation decks offering panoramic views of the Kitan Strait.The islands' unique atmosphere, where nature reclaims the man-made structures, has drawn comparisons to Studio Ghibli's 'Castle in the Sky'.
