Getting There

  • Car

    If you're driving, start from the center of Kyoto. Head northeast on Shijo Avenue (Shijo-dori) towards the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Continue straight for about 4 kilometers. You'll pass the Heian Shrine on your left. Once you reach the intersection at the Nanzen-ji Temple, turn left onto the road that leads to the Philosopher's Path (Tetsugaku No Michi). There are parking areas nearby, but they can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. After parking, walk along the path which is about 1.5 kilometers long and lined with cherry trees.

  • Public Transportation

    To reach Philosopher's Path using public transportation, take the Kyoto City Bus No. 100 or 203 from Kyoto Station. Get off at the Nanzen-ji Eikando-michi stop. From there, walk about 10 minutes towards Nanzen-ji Temple. Once you arrive at Nanzen-ji, you will see the entrance to the Philosopher's Path nearby. The walk along the path is scenic and will lead you through beautiful landscapes, along the canal lined with cherry trees.

    If you prefer cycling, rent a bicycle from a rental shop in Kyoto. Start from the central area and head northeast towards the Philosopher's Path. You can cycle along the Kamo River, which offers a pleasant route. Follow the river until you reach the area near Nanzen-ji Temple. From there, park your bicycle at designated racks and enjoy walking along the Philosopher's Path. The total cycling distance is approximately 4 kilometers.
