Getting There

Walking

From Kyoto Station, exit the north side and walk north on Karasuma Street. Turn right onto Shichijo Street, then left onto Ainomachi Street. The garden entrance will be on your left, approximately a 10-12 minute walk from the station.
Public Transport

From Kyoto Station, take city bus number 5 to Kawaramachi Shomen. From there, walk a short distance east to reach Shōsei-en Garden. The bus fare is approximately ¥230.
Taxi

A taxi from Kyoto Station to Shōsei-en Garden will take approximately 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic. The estimated fare is between ¥700 and ¥900.

Shōsei-en Garden, a designated National Place of Scenic Beauty, offers visitors a tranquil retreat from the bustling city of Kyoto. Historically, the land was donated to Sennyo, the 13th head priest of the Higashi Honganji Temple, by Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1641. The garden was designed as a place for Sennyo's retirement and as a guesthouse for important visitors. The garden's design is credited to Jozan Ishikawa and Kobori Enshu.Throughout the year, Shōsei-en showcases a variety of flowers and plants, adding to its scenic charm. The garden is designed around a central pond, Ingetsu-chi (Moon Image Pond), and features teahouses, a Buddhist hall, and reception halls. These architectural elements, combined with the carefully arranged natural scenery, create a harmonious and picturesque landscape. Key features include the Rōfū-tei Reception Hall, the Bōka-kaku Pavilion, and the Kaitō-rō Bridge. The Bōka-kaku Pavilion features a unique two-storied roofed gate design and a room with a compass pattern on the ceiling. The Kaitō-rō Bridge connects the North Island and the Tanpū-kei (Vermilion Maple Ravine).Visitors can explore the garden's various scenic spots, including the Ingetsu-chi (Moon Image Pond), which reflects the moon's image on its surface. The garden also features a nine-story stone pagoda, a memorial to Minamoto no Toru.
