Togakushi Forest Botanical Garden: A Natural Sanctuary
Discover Nagano's natural beauty: Explore diverse gardens, observe wild birds, and enjoy a peaceful escape at Togakushi Forest Botanical Garden.
The Togakushi Forest Botanical Garden, nestled in the Myōkō-Togakushi Renzan National Park, offers a tranquil retreat into nature. This vast garden, spanning 71 hectares, is a haven for diverse plant life and a sanctuary for wild birds. Visitors can explore various themed gardens, including the Fir Tree Garden and the Skunk Cabbage Garden, each showcasing unique botanical features. The garden is particularly known for its stunning display of Asian skunk cabbage (mizubasho) in June, with flowers and leaves larger than those found elsewhere. Well-maintained walking paths wind through the garden, providing opportunities for therapeutic walks and observation of local wildlife. Keep an eye out for forest green tree frogs, fireflies, and a wide variety of bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The garden's diverse environment ranges from broad-leaved forests to coniferous forests, offering a rich tapestry of natural scenery. Historically, the Togakushi area has been a place of mountain worship and spiritual practice. The garden's proximity to the Togakushi Shrine adds to the area's mystical atmosphere, inviting visitors to connect with nature and history. Whether you're seeking a peaceful walk, a chance to observe rare plants and birds, or a deeper connection with the natural world, the Togakushi Forest Botanical Garden offers an enriching experience. Adjacent to the garden, visitors can find the Mori-no-Manabiya forest museum, where they can learn about the nature of Togakushi through dioramas and videos.
