Founded in 1052 by Fujiwara no Yorimichi, this Buddhist temple was originally a countryside villa before being transformed into a sacred space. The temple reflects the Pure Land Buddhist beliefs, aiming to represent paradise on Earth. The Phoenix Hall (Hoo-do), completed in 1053, is the most iconic structure.
