Discover more about Mount Tenpō

Mount Tenpō, situated in Osaka's Minato Ward, holds the distinction of being Japan's second-lowest mountain. This man-made hill, only 4.53 meters (approximately 15 feet) above sea level, was formed in 1831 (Tenpō year 2) from the dredging of the Ajigawa River. The purpose was to improve access to Osaka for larger ships and to prevent flooding. Originally, Mount Tenpō stood at about 20 meters and served as a navigational marker for ships. Over time, cherry blossom and pine trees were planted, and shops began to emerge, transforming it into a popular visitor attraction. By the late 19th century (Meiji era), the surrounding area was developed into a park, providing a recreational space for residents and visitors alike. Today, Mount Tenpō is located within Tenpōzan Park, near other leisure facilities such as the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan and the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel. Visitors can easily reach the summit, marked by a triangulation point, and enjoy the surrounding park with its hilltop observation area offering harbor views. For a unique souvenir, some local shops near the park offer Mount Tenpō climbing certificates.
