Myōman-ji Temple, located in the Iwakura Hataedacho area of Kyoto's Sakyo Ward, provides a tranquil retreat with its stunning Buddhist architecture and serene gardens. Founded in 1389 by the Priest Nichiju, the temple was initially located in downtown Kyoto before being moved to its current location in 1968 to escape increasing urbanization.
Myōman-ji is known for its seasonal beauty, with cherry blossoms in spring and colorful azaleas in early summer. The temple's grounds feature a concrete replica of the Bodh Gaya stupa, where the historical Buddha attained enlightenment, and a statue of Buddha. One of the temple's treasures is the bell of Anchin and Kiyohime, steeped in legend. According to the tale, Kiyohime, transformed into a dragon by unrequited love, destroyed the bell in her wrath. The current bell is a bronze replica of the original.
The 'Snow Garden' (Yuki-no-niwa), designed by Matsunaga Teitoku, offers a tranquil space for contemplation. The temple also enshrines the legendary bell of Anchin and Kiyohime. Myōman-ji provides a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and spiritual ambiance, making it a worthwhile destination for those seeking peace and cultural enrichment.

Public Transport
From Kyoto Station, take the JR Tōzai Line to Kyoto Station. Transfer to the Kyoto City Bus (Bus No. 204 or 206) and ride to the Iwakura Hataedacho stop. From there, it is a short 10-minute walk to the temple. The Kyoto City Bus fare is a flat rate of ¥230 for adults and ¥120 for children within the central area. Consider purchasing a Kyoto Subway and Bus 1-Day Pass for ¥1100 if you plan to visit multiple attractions.
Walking
From Kino Station on the Eizan Electric Railway Kurama Line, it's approximately a 5-minute walk to Myōman-ji Temple. Exit the station and walk through the quiet residential area, crossing over a small hill. The temple gate will then be visible.
Taxi
Taxis are readily available in Kyoto. From Kyoto Station, a taxi ride to Myōman-ji Temple will take approximately 25-35 minutes, depending on traffic. The taxi fare will be around ¥2,090. Note that the starting fare for a taxi in Kyoto is ¥490 - ¥500 for the first kilometer, with additional charges per kilometer after that.
