Discover more about Site of Naniwanomiya-Daigokuden (Council Hall in the Imperial Palace)

The Site of Naniwanomiya-Daigokuden offers a glimpse into Osaka's significant role as an ancient capital of Japan. This historical site was once the location of the Naniwa Palace, serving as the council hall (Daigokuden) where the emperor conducted official state ceremonies and met with foreign envoys. The palace complex was in use for about 150 years, from the 6th to the 8th centuries. Although mentioned in historical records, the exact location of the palace remained a mystery for centuries. It wasn't until post-World War II excavations, led by Dr. Yamane Tokutaro, that the ruins were rediscovered in the Hoenzaka area in 1961. Today, the site has been transformed into a peaceful park where visitors can stroll through the grounds and reflect on the area's rich history. While the original structures no longer stand, the park features a restored base of the Daigokuden, allowing visitors to imagine the scale and grandeur of the original palace. The park also marks the different levels of the two Naniwa Palaces that were built on the site. The earlier Naniwa Palace, built around 650, is marked below ground with red tiles and granite pillars, while the later palace, built in 726, is marked above ground with a stone foundation. Informational plaques around the site provide historical context and insights into the palace's significance. From the restored Daigokuden, visitors can enjoy views of Osaka Castle.
