Uji Park: A Riverside Oasis of History and Beauty

Uji Park, officially known as Kyoto Prefectural Uji Park, is a serene landscape sculpted by the Uji River as it flows through the city of Uji. The park is not a single, unified space but rather a collection of riverside areas and islands, including Tounoshima and Tachibanajima, connected by bridges and pathways. These spaces offer visitors a chance to immerse themselves in nature while exploring sites of historical and cultural importance. The park is particularly famous for its seasonal beauty. In early April, the park transforms into a cherry blossom paradise, hosting the Uji River Cherry Blossom Festival. Late November and early December bring vibrant autumn foliage, painting the landscape in warm hues. Key features within and around Uji Park include the iconic Uji Bridge, one of Japan's oldest bridges, and the thirteen-story stone pagoda on Tounoshima Island. Nearby, visitors can explore the Ujigami Shrine and Byodo-in Temple, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The park also offers opportunities to witness traditional cormorant fishing (Ukai) during the summer months.
