Discover more about Hozen-ji Temple

Hozen-ji Temple, founded in 1637, provides a tranquil contrast to the vibrant Dotonbori area of Osaka. Originally located in a former graveyard, the temple grounds were once much larger before the surrounding area evolved into an entertainment district. During the 17th century, Hozen-ji was a popular venue for stage performances and rakugo storytelling. Although the main hall was destroyed during World War II, the Fudo-Myoo statue survived. The temple was rebuilt, and the Fudo Myoo statue is now covered in moss due to the tradition of visitors splashing water on it for good luck, earning it the nickname 'Mizukake Fudo'. This practice is believed to grant wishes and protect against evil. Hozen-ji Yokocho, the narrow alleyway leading to the temple, enhances the atmosphere with its traditional shops and restaurants. Lanterns light the cobblestone path, creating a magical ambiance, especially in the evening. The alley offers a glimpse into old Osaka, with opportunities to savor local cuisine such as teppanyaki and okonomiyaki.
