Discover more about Kagawa Museum

The Kagawa Museum is more than just a repository of artifacts; it's a vibrant center that brings the region's past and present to life. Opened in 2008, the museum consolidated three earlier institutions to create a comprehensive view of Kagawa. The museum's exhibits span a wide range, including the region's flora and fauna, historical progression from the Jomon and Yayoi periods, and the development of Takamatsu as an Edo Period castle town. Highlights include original maps of Takamatsu from the 17th and 18th centuries and a recreation of a post-WWII home. Religious art is also featured, with a focus on Kobo Daishi and the Shikoku pilgrimage. Beyond its historical collections, the Kagawa Museum also showcases art, including works by local artists like Isamu Noguchi and Genichiro Inokuma. Special exhibitions often link to the Setouchi Triennale, a contemporary art festival held on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. A hands-on learning corner allows visitors to try on traditional outfits such as a junihitoe (Heian-period kimono) or samurai armor. The museum also hosts lectures and training related to the prefecture's history, folklore, and art.
