Car
From Sanuki, get on the Takamatsu Expressway and head towards Takamatsu. Continue on the expressway until you reach the Sano Interchange. From there, follow the signs for Route 50 towards Nikko. Once you arrive in Nikko, follow the signs to Nikkō Tōshogū, which is located at 2301 Sannai, Nikko, Tochigi 321-1431. Make sure to have some cash on hand as there are tolls along the expressway, which may cost around ¥1000-¥2000 depending on your route.
Public Transportation
To reach Nikkō Tōshogū by public transportation from Sanuki, first take a train from Sanuki Station to Takamatsu Station. From Takamatsu, board a Limited Express train on the JR Shikoku Line towards Okayama. At Okayama Station, transfer to the JR Sanyo Shinkansen to Ueno Station. Then, switch to the JR Nikko Line towards Nikko. Upon arrival at Nikko Station, take a bus (Nikko City Bus) that goes directly to Nikkō Tōshogū. The bus fare is around ¥300, and the total trip may take approximately 3-4 hours depending on connections.
Combination (Car + Public Transport)
For those who prefer a mix of transportation, you can drive from Sanuki to Takamatsu, park at the Takamatsu Station, and then take the Limited Express train as described above. This option allows you to enjoy a scenic drive and then relax on the train ride. Just ensure you check the train schedules to align your travel times efficiently.
