Walking

From Sakurajima Port, Tsukiyomi Shrine is a short walk away. Upon exiting the ferry terminal, follow the main road. The shrine's large torii gate is visible from the street. The walk takes approximately 2 minutes.

Public Transport

Upon arrival at Sakurajima Port via the Sakurajima Ferry, the Sakurajima Island View bus is available. This bus loops around Sakurajima's main attractions. A one-day pass costs 500 yen and can be purchased at the Sakurajima Tourist Information Center or on the bus. Check the bus schedule in advance as services may be limited.

Overview

Tsukiyomi Shrine, the largest shrine on Sakurajima, has been a sacred place for over 1300 years, dating back to around 708 to 715 AD. Originally located elsewhere, the shrine was moved to its current location after being buried by lava during the Taisho eruption in 1914. This relocation speaks to the resilience and enduring importance of the shrine to the local community.The shrine is dedicated to Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, the moon god and younger brother of Amaterasu, the sun goddess. It's one of the few shrines that venerates this deity, who is associated with the calendar, tides, safety, and safe voyages. The shrine also enshrines Konohana-sakuya-hime, a goddess associated with Mount Fuji and volcanoes, adding to the site's spiritual significance.Visitors can explore the tranquil grounds, admire the traditional architecture, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. A small observation deck offers magnificent views of Sakurajima, Kinko Bay, and Kagoshima City. The shrine provides a unique opportunity to connect with Japanese mythology and experience the spiritual heart of Sakurajima.
