Overview
Kitanocho offers a unique blend of Japanese and European architecture, providing visitors with a glimpse into Kobe's cosmopolitan past. Strolling through Kitanocho feels like stepping back in time, with its cobblestone streets, vintage lamp posts, and stunning views of Kobe and the harbor.Originally, over 300 Western-style houses were constructed in Kitanocho, but only around 30 remain today. Many of these have been transformed into museums, cafes, and boutiques, allowing visitors to explore the area's history and culture. The Japanese government designated the area as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1980.Notable attractions include the Weathercock House (Kazamidori-no-yakata), a symbol of Kitanocho with its distinctive weather vane, and the Moegi House, known for its striking green exterior. Other interesting houses include the English House, Ben's House, and the French House. Combination tickets are available for those wishing to visit multiple houses. Kitano Tenman Shrine, dating back to 1724, offers a reminder of Japanese culture amidst the Western atmosphere.
