Getting There

Public Transport

From Awa-Ikeda Station, take a Shikoku Kotsu bus towards Iya Valley. The bus ride to the Iya Kazurabashi (vine bridge) takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. The fare is around ¥2000. Be sure to check the bus schedule in advance as services are limited. From the Iya Kazurabashi bus stop, it's a short walk to the bridge entrance.
Taxi

From Oboke Station, a taxi to the Iya Kazurabashi (vine bridge) will take approximately 25-35 minutes, depending on traffic. The estimated fare is between ¥6,000 and ¥8,000. Taxis are available at Oboke Station, but it's advisable to book in advance, especially during peak season. Be aware that some taxi drivers may have limited English proficiency.

The Iya Valley, or Iyakei, is a secluded mountainous valley along the Iya River in western Tokushima Prefecture. Its steep, forested slopes are connected by winding mountain roads, leading visitors to a traditional, rural culture.Historically, the Iya Valley served as a refuge for the Taira clan (Heike) after their defeat in the Genpei War in the late 12th century. The valley's inaccessibility made it an ideal hiding place, and their descendants still reside in the tiny mountain villages. The vine bridges, or kazurabashi, are said to have been created by the Taira clan as a means to easily cut off access in case of pursuit.Today, Iya Valley offers a variety of attractions. The Iya Kazurabashi is the largest and most accessible of the remaining vine bridges, stretching 45 meters across the Iya River. Visitors can also explore the Oboke and Koboke Gorges by pleasure boat or try white-water rafting. Other notable sites include the Peeing Boy statue overlooking the valley, the thatched-roof houses of Ochiai Village, and the various hot springs in the area.The valley is divided into Nishi Iya (West Iya) and Oku Iya (Inner Iya), with Nishi Iya being more accessible by bus. Oku Iya, further into the valley, is best explored by rental car due to infrequent bus service. Despite improved access, the Iya Valley remains a place to experience a traditional, rural culture that is hard to find in modern Japan.
