Discover more about Hiyo Moss Garden

Hiyo Moss Garden, nestled in the mountains of Ishikawa Prefecture, is a testament to the beauty that arises when nature and human care intertwine. This unique satoyama, or traditional Japanese rural mountain village, showcases a landscape carpeted in vibrant green moss, cultivated over generations. The village of Hiyo, with a population of fewer than 30 residents, has carefully preserved this environment, creating a tranquil haven for visitors. Visitors can wander along narrow pathways, illuminated by sunlight filtering through towering cedar trees, creating an atmosphere of calm and reflection. The garden boasts around 48 varieties of moss, each contributing to the garden's lush tapestry. The moss thrives thanks to the area's high humidity and the villagers' historical practice of using fallen leaves as fuel, which inadvertently created ideal growing conditions. Today, the Hiyo Moss Garden Preservation Council and the Forest of Wisdom Project work to maintain and share this special place with the world. The garden offers a different experience with each season. Spring brings vibrant greens, while autumn offers a stunning display of colors. The Hiyo Moss Garden is more than just a visual delight; it's a cultural experience, offering insights into the significance of moss in Japanese gardening and its role in traditional aesthetics.
